NY Jets' Chris Herndon Suspended 4 Games After DUI Crash Case Conviction

14 July 2019

Sam Darnold will be without one of his top targets for the first four games of the season.

Herndon was arrested in Rockaway Township, New Jersey, in the early morning hours of June 2 last year after crashing into another auto, driven by a 76-year-old man.

NY announced on Friday that tight end Chris Herndon will be suspended for that length for "for violating the NFL's policy and program on substances of abuse".

Herndon, 23, can participate in training camp and preseason games. He can return to the active roster in time for the Jets' visit to Philadelphia on October 6. The test revealed a blood-alcohol level over New Jersey's limit of.08, according to State Police Sgt. Lawrence Peele. The driver, who was 76 years old, suffered a bruised and gashed arm.

Herndon impressed as a rookie, finishing second on the Jets with 502 receiving yards, which also ranked second among rookie tight ends. The NFL Network reported the extra two games were because a woman at the scene of the accident claimed bodily harm due to the crash. Commissioner Roger Goodell can dole out additional discipline when determining suspensions if he determines there were aggravating circumstances involved. Witnesses said Herndon may well have been going over 100 miles per hour at the time of the incident. The Miami product was fined $639 and had his license revoked in New Jersey for 90 days as a result. Once he's back, he has the ability to be a low-end TE1, but his upside might not be worth the headache of drafting him and being without him for four weeks and New York's Week 4 bye. He led all first-year players at his position with 39 receptions, catching four touchdowns in the process. Other options include 2019's fourth-round pick Trevon Wesco and veteran Daniel Brown.
