Hamilton's Kia Nurse named a starting guard for the WNBA all-star game

13 July 2019

She'll be joined by Aces teammates Liz Cambage and Kayla McBride in the starting lineup. Delle Donne gets the first pick of the starters and Wilson gets first choice of the reserves.

As the top vote-getter for this year's All-Star Game, Delle Donne will serve as one of the team captains and will have the chance to select the first player for her team.

Wilson checked in at No. 2 in the fan vote on July 2 and had been widely tipped to be a starter by national media outlets.

The starters include Liz Cambage, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Natasha Howard, Jonquel Jones, Jewell Loyd, Kayla McBride and Kia Nurse.

The starters were selected through voting from fans, WNBA players themselves, and WNBA media members. The two teams have the best records in the league as of Thursday. She captained one of the teams last season, and Candace Parker captained the other. "We're both very competitive people".

But starting in the All-Star game for Delle Donne will depend on how fast she recovers from an injury. "Players who play hard the whole game, good things are bound to happen". I'd like it to be a somewhat competitive game.

The 10 starters for AT&T WNBA All-Star 2019 - announced earlier today on ESPN's The Jump - were selected by a combination of fans (50 percent of the vote), current WNBA players (25 percent) and a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters (25 percent). Those will be announced Monday. They may not vote for their own players. Delle Donne received 32,460 votes while Wilson received 26,475.

Delle Donne's team lost to Candace Parker's squad a year ago in the All-Star contest.

Delle Donne and Griner have been named All-Stars for the sixth time each.

Laimbeer, a two-time WNBA Coach of the Year (2003, 2015), has earned All-Star head coaching honors for the third time.

"It's an honour to not only represent the New York Liberty but also my home country of Canada in the 2019 WNBA all-star game", Nurse said.
