Women's National Team Parades Through NYC's 'Canyon Of Heroes'

The U.S. will share a pot of $4 million for winning the tournament, while France's men's squad earned $38 million for winning in Russian Federation a year ago. He coaches her team, in addition to coaching in the recreational soccer league he plays in.

The festivities will honor the national team's remarkable run in France, where the USA women went undefeated in the World Cup, turning away determined challenges from talented and physical squads such as France, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.

The Americans finally got the break they had been seeking in the 61st minute, when U.S. co-captain Alex Morgan was fouled in the penalty box by Dutch defender Stefanie van der Gragt. Forbes estimates that the 2018 men's World Cup in Russian Federation brought in $6 billion in revenue compared to an expected total of $131 million for this year's tournament in France. However, according to Wall Street Journal, the U.S. women's games generated about $50.8 million in revenue from 2016 to 2018, while the men's games earned a slightly lower $49.9 million during the same period.

The mayor, a Democratic presidential candidate, said he would insist that Congress pass an amendment to the Amateur Sports Act "requiring equal pay for men and women in all of our national sports teams".

Kate Lane, who watched the parade, called the pay gap "massive" for the soccer players and "across the board" for most women. Just like so many other Americans do when they come of age, ticker-tape parades even got their own vehicle. The team was also a recipient of the city's last ticker-tape parade, in 2015.

Megan Rapinoe (C) and members of the World Cup-winning US women's soccer team take part in a ticker-tape parade for the women's World Cup champions in New York, US, July 10, 2019.

She says that if she sees Morgan in the parade she's going to "scream my head off and try to get a hug". Hopefully, the US Soccer Federation officials, who have agreed to enter mediation talks with the players, will resolve the situation soon. They were followed by stars like Jesse Owens, the first African American athlete to be celebrated with a ticker-tape parade, and Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to earn a ticker-tape parade, for her feat as the first woman to swim the English Channel. It will get $4 million for winning the World Cup from Federation Internationale de Football Association, the global soccer governing body.

"We cheered for them on the field, and we are with them, too for equality off the field", McCray said during her speech at the City Hall ceremony after the parade. "You need to do better for everyone".

The consistent dominance by the USA women's team has rarely - or perhaps never - been seen in other sports on such a global scale.

"They represent the best of America, our values, spirit and drive on the world's biggest stage", Menendez said.

"The clear unequitable [sic] pay between the U.S. men's and women's soccer teams is unacceptable and I'm glad the U.S. Women's Soccer Team latest victory is causing public outcry". "At this moment, they are cultural icons and should be paid as such".
