Wimbledon 2019: Novak Djokovic sweeps through to semifinals

11 July 2019

Bethanie Mattek-Sands, Brad Gilbert, Chris McKendry and Jason Goodall look ahead to the men's semifinals at Wimbledon, which include the first meeting between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the All England Club since their championship match in 2008. Djokovic won the final three games to win the set.

Against Querrey, Nadal was broken when serving for the first set at 5-4. Federer's game is less reliant on a big serve, but Nadal needs to take advantage of any break chances.

"I guess this is where players like myself, Rafael Nada and Roger Federer, in a way we go on to the next level in terms of tennis and focus".

Nadal's victory meant it was the first time more than one Spanish man had reached the Wimbledon semis in the same year, with Roberto Bautista Agut also through to the last four after he beat Argentine Guido Pella in an earlier quarter-final.

Third-seed Nadal had to dig deep and stave off a spirited challenge by American Sam Querrey in the first set before running away with a 7-5, 6-2, 6-2 win in just over two hours in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

The potential match-up would be their 40th, but only the first at the All England Club since the famous 2008 men's singles final, when Nadal overcame Federer in an epic five-set encounter. Novak held at 15 with an ace in game nine to grab a lead and sealed the set with a break in game ten after a backhand error from Goffin for a 6-4 in 48 minutes.

"Well, " the 31-year-old Bautista Agut said, "it feels better to be here in London".

In chalking up his 100th win at Wimbledon, Federer became the first player to reach the career century mark at any of the four Grand Slam tournaments.

JL: I'm sticking with my original pick from the beginning of the tournament: Roger Federer.

Goffin started well enough against Djokovic on an afternoon that was humid and sunny, with the temperature in the mid-70s. "I had a tough time holding serve, and in the last two sets I made a lot of mistakes".

Goffin was able to hang in there at the baseline and his on-the-run passing shots were dialed in.

Bautista Agut is a rugged and reliable performer in Grand Slams and a regular visitor to the third and fourth rounds.

Until then, Goffin was playing crisply and cleanly. The most recent match between these two players was last month at the French Open where Nadal won in straight sets. "Most of the rallies went his way".

Djokovic did to Goffin exactly what he does to so many opponents on so many surfaces and at so many tournaments: He takes their best shot, deals with it and then wears them down.

"I felt like I managed to dismantle his game", said the Serb.
