Ocasio-Cortez Slammed for Calling Border Facilities ‘Concentration Camps’

20 June 2019

Pitzer asserts, as she did in an interview with JTA a year ago, that what the government calls federal migrant shelters or detainment facilities fit her definition of concentration camps: "mass detention of civilians without trial".

"Concentration camps assured a slave labor supply to help in the Nazi war effort, even as the brutality of life inside the camps helped assure the ultimate goal of 'extermination through labor, '" the Israeli museum, billed as a world center for Holocaust research, tweeted Wednesday at the New York Democrat. "Her statement devalued the horrors of the Holocaust and of the 6 million who were systematically and purposely murdered".

However, Bend the Arc: Jewish Action defended Ocasio-Cortez, saying that the real outrage should be directed at the Trump administration and not the congresswomen's language. On Meet the Press Daily this afternoon, Todd asked him about Ocasio-Cortez's comments and if they bothered him.

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) has been among Ocasio-Cortez's most vocal congressional critics on the issue, writing on Twitter on Tuesday that Ocasio-Cortez should "do us all a favor and spend just a few minutes learning some actual history".

These readings of the Holocaust suggest that there are no broader lessons to be drawn from it, other than the unique persecution faced by Jews. "You demean their memory and disgrace yourself with comments like this".

The US is facing a surge in migrant arrivals from impoverished Central American countries which are plagued by gang violence, and the numbers have overwhelmed the ability of US authorities to temporarily shelter and process them.

Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her comments on Tuesday night and emphasized that she wasn't referring to Nazi-era death camps. The euphoria among the right-wing base that this cruelty induces can only be soured when someone draws a straight line from these policies to episodes of history that are universally accepted as bad-just as AOC did here. "Opening an impeachment inquiry is exactly what we must do when the President obstructs justice, advises witnesses to ignore legal subpoenas, & more", she continued.

In another tweet Wednesday, she said Congress should not give the Department of Homeland Security "one dime" to construct "these camps".

"Not one dime should go to DHS for building these camps as they detain children & families".

A boy from Honduras is shown being taken into custody by US Border Patrol agents near the US-Mexico Border near Mission, Texas, on June 12, 2018.

"For the shrieking Republicans who don't know the difference: concentration camps are not the same as death camps".

Ocasio-Cortez warned, "We are losing to an authoritarian and fascist presidency". Because from what it looks like, she has no plans to retract them.

What, then, is the meaning of a phrase like "never again" when the institutions that proselytize it also argue that Holocaust memory can not be sullied by the present tense? They think of Auschwitz.
