"Grumpy Cat" on the field before the Major League Baseball opening day game between the Colorado Rockies and the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on 4 April 2016 in Phoenix, Arizona.

The cat, whose real name is Tardar Sauce, became famous in 2012 after photographs of her grumpy expression rocketed across the web.

"Some days are grumpier than others", Grumpy Cat's publicist said in a statement on Friday, sharing news that the internet's favorite meme star has died. However, with a heavy heart I must inform everyone that, she has passed away.

The sourpuss with the piercing look of contempt quickly became a meme, and placing bold words above and below her frown became a common way for humans to express grumpy thoughts.

Rest in peace to the one and only Grumpy Cat, who died at seven years old on May 14. The cat starred in a Lifetime Christmas movie, Grumpy Cat's Worst Christmas Ever, she was on the cover of New York Magazine, and her book hit No. 7 on The New York Times' advice, how-to and miscellaneous best-seller list.

In addition to Grumpy Cat blowing up on social media - she had almost 2.5 million followers on Instagram at the time of her death - she also made many media appearances throughout her life and was an official spokesperson for Friskies. She's done television commercials for Honey Nut Cheerios and took photos with hundreds of fans at South by Southwest.

Grumpy Cat's angry expression was the result of being born with dwarfism and an underbite. Her limited stint did not qualify for a Tony award.

Her appearances weren't restricted to the cyberspace.

"Grumpy cat will always be a legend in my heart". Grumpy Cat Limited sued the owners of the USA coffee company Grenade for exceeding an agreement over the cat's image.
