Biden camp responds after Giuliani's canceled trip to Ukraine

15 May 2019

Before Giuliani canceled his trip, Democrats attacked Giuliani's plan, saying it amounted to an attempt to solicit foreign help to influence the 2020 election. Giuliani said he believes that the incoming president is being advised, in particular, by Serhiy Leshchenko, an opposition parliament member who helped uncover the off-the-books payments made to Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

Giuliani told told Fox News Friday night that he "was not going to go because he thinks he would be - quote - "walking into a group of people that are enemies of the president.in some cases enemies of the United States".

According to the New York Times, Giuliani plans to travel to Kyiv in the coming days and wants to meet with the nation's president-elect to urge him to pursue inquiries that allies of the White House contend could yield new information about two matters of intense interest to Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump has known as attention to the scrutiny of Mr. Biden's son Hunter Biden, and to questions in regards to the venerable vice president's involvement within the removal of a Ukrainian prosecutor whose workplace had authority over investigations of the oligarch whose company paid Hunter Biden.

"The meeting would have accomplished little and may be in the hands of those who might misrepresent it", Giuliani said Saturday in a statement.

"It's stunning that the Trump administration is going down the same tragic path they did in 2016 seeking help from a foreign government again to influence an American presidential election".

Giuliani's trip was first reported by the New York Times. But it "certainly it would be an appropriate thing to" discuss with him, Trump said.

"I think this was a setup", he added later.

"Explain to me why Biden shouldn't be investigated", Giuliani said, responding to criticism from Sen. "We've had enough of that and Rudy Giuliani should just back off".

"We have come to a very sorry state when it is considered OK for an American politician, never mind an attorney for the president, to go and seek foreign intervention in American politics", Rep. Jerrold Nadler of NY told reporters Friday.

One regards the origin of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States election, under which Trump was not found to have conspired with Moscow but which left to Congress the question of whether he obstructed justice.

Democrats took aim at Giuliani for planning the trip at all.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA and Rep. Beto O'Rourke of Texas, despite running against Joe Biden in the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, are defending the former vice president against President Donald Trump's effort to smear him by claiming he behaved inappropriately toward Ukraine while serving under President Barack Obama. "I mean, you're asking me a question I just haven't thought of". There is no evidence that Biden's conduct was improper and at least one expert has said the accusations don't hold up.

Asked elsewhere in the Politico interview if he was disturbed that North Korea had fired short-range missiles, Trump said: "They're short-range and I don't consider that a breach of trust at all".
