Jordan Spieth sits T5, but a full nine shots behind.
"I three-putted like three times, twice early in the round - that's just nerves", Romo said. "I'd like to play a bogey-free round and really get something going".
Brooks Koepka puts the finishing touches on his PGA Championship preparations on Thursday when he tees off in the AT&T Byron Nelson with one eye on next week's second major of 2019.
A four-time PGA Tour victor, including at this season's CIMB Classic, Leishman is hopeful he can take his place in next week's PGA Championship at Bethpage Black, New York.
Romo opened with a 14-foot birdie putt on the par-5 first hole.
"I really hit some good shots, and I'm close", Romo told reporters following his round.
"I think more than anything, I got a sense to be able to hit a lot of high-quality shots under what is a pressure situation for me", Romo said.
"Given the tougher conditions this afternoon and then tomorrow morning, it's just kind of about hanging around and trying to make something happen on the weekend", Spieth said.
Roger Sloan of Merrit, B.C., (72) Nick Taylor of Abbotsford, B.C., (73) and Ben Silverman of Thornhill, Ont., (74) are well back of the lead. However, he also gave away as many as four bogeys that saw him finish at 70 at the par-71 at the Trinity Forest. He was still 2 over after another par at No. 5. I feel good on the greens. His shot to within a foot on the 311-yard No. 5 marked the first of six straight birdies.
Denny McCarthy is ranked 2nd in SG Putting, at.828.
Billy Andrade is three strokes behind Stricker and two-time champion Bernhard Langer matched Day at four back. "It was really enjoyable".
After a round, we always look to see what stands out about a player, and if we could have predicted the strong play (Guess i missed him in my dark horse rankings).
The runner-up previous year, Leishman withdrew from the Dallas tournament because of a back injury. He had never been on the front nine before Thursday, having practiced only on the back nine Tuesday before Wednesday's pro-am was washed out.
McCarthy had 10 birdies over a 12-hole stretch after a double bogey in his morning round. He has yet to make a bogey on the more hard back nine, going 8-under on those holes.
"Other than that, I struck the ball beautifully", said Koepka, the two-time U.S. Open victor who next week will defend his PGA Championship title.
