Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov in concussion protocol after absorbing Ovie punches

Monday's game also marked the first time that Svechnikov got into a boxing match on the ice, according to Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour.

Following Carolina's 5-0 victory on home ice to get themselves back into the first round matchup, the health of their young teammate was top of mind for the Hurricanes. Svechnikov, who went to hospital after the fight, will miss the next game (and probably more) with a concussion. "He said our guy challenged him", Brind'Amour said after Monday night's game.

Both players received five-minute penalties for fighting, and Svechnikov was ultimately barred from returning. Gloves were dropped at the ninth minute after 19-year-old Svechnikov apparently provoked the captain of the Washington Capitals to lose his temper. That left his status unclear with the Capitals up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series. He asked me to fight and I said, 'let's go, yeah.' I hope he's ok. It's his first fight.

The Carolina Hurricanes' Andrei Svechnikov just learned that the hard way. So, if that's the case, it's a little different. Brind'Amour said he looks normal but assuming he's out for next game.

"But if you watch the video, because I got to watch it, he slashes him twice, Ovie - whack, whack - and then Svech gives it back". So it's a little bit frustrating because he got hurt. He's played 90 games.

Brind'Amour said that though the Canes are exercising caution, Svechnikov appears fine.

Ovechkin won his record eighth Maurice "Rocket" Richard Trophy this season as the league's top goal scorer. "I'll just leave it at that". He had one goal and two assists in the Capitals' first two games in these playoffs.
