The season eight premiere of "Game of Thrones" brought in a series record 17.4 million viewers on Sunday night, according to HBO.

The fantasy series has been a major success for the subscription TV network, with Foxtel the exclusive TV broadcaster of the hit worldwide drama created by HBO. The episode released only to DirecTV Now users, who received notifications around 5 p.m. ET on the premiere date that the first episode was available. The move allowed the company to stream HBO shows on DirecTV Now. For starters, the wall is now in tatters, decimated by the Night King at the end of Game of Thrones season 7. "It is the television series of a generation". Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead-Wright), recently empowered by magic and clairvoyance, urged everybody to move on, since the Army of the Undead was making grisly progress: "We don't have time for all this". A boost in viewership this season could also help HBO promote other new shows. That's a series high audience for "Game of Thrones", beating the 16.9 million viewers that its season 7 finale scored on its premiere night.
