Responders pulled him from a drainage canal. The man, whose name was not immediately released, died after being taken to a hospital.

Two children were killed on a back road in East Texas when a pine tree fell onto the auto in which they were riding in a severe thunderstorm Saturday near Pollok, about 150 miles (241 kilometers) southeast of Dallas.

Tornadoes embedded in the storms pose a significant risk overnight since they are hard to see and people are less likely to receive warnings while they're asleep, Van Dam said. At least eight were critically hurt. Those in the area should also expect quarter-size hail with the storms.

Another EF-3 twister flattened part of Franklin, Texas. Two people were hospitalized for injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, while others were treated at the scene, Yezak said.

The next round is expected on Thursday ahead of a cold front, according to the National Weather Service. "There are a few tornado warnings and heavy thunderstorm warnings", Oravec said.

The weekend's storm brought tornadoes that killed at least five people, including three children, in the U.S. South, officials said.

Tornado warnings remained in effect on Sunday for southeastern Alabama's Barbour and Russell counties, Oravec said.

"Strong winds will blow around unsecured objects and may blow down tree limbs and power lines".

Heavy rain is expected to move through the tri-state area, but wind gusts will pick up by the afternoon.Thunder and lightning has been reported throughout parts of the region.

The Storm Prediction Center says trees and power lines are down in Brewton near the Florida line, and some power is out. Franklin is about 125 miles (200 kilometres) south of Dallas.

More than a quarter million customers are without power from storms and the winds, with the greatest concentration of power outages in Pennsylvania and Virginia, CNN meteorologist Dave Hennen said.

As the storm moved east, one person was killed by a tornado in the northern MS, according to Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley. A tornado was reported in the area at the time. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed. No fatalities were reported.

The roof of a hotel in New Albany, Mississippi, was damaged, although the cause was unclear.

The storm system's first two victims were two children in east Texas. Straight-line winds leave debris in a fan-shaped pattern, while tornadoes toss debris in circles. John Moore, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Jackson, says a twister was reported Saturday in the Vicksburg area of MS and was indicated on radar.

In East Texas, authorities say two children were killed when high winds toppled a tree onto the back of the family vehicle while it was in motion.

According to Capt Alton Lenderman of the Angelina County Sheriff's Office, the tree "flattened the auto like a pancake", but the parents, who were riding in the front of the vehicle, were not injured.

The Alto Police Department also confirmed a woman who was injured last night at Caddo Mounds has died.

The tornado formed in Milam County and crossed in Robertson County, reaching wind speeds of 140 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
