Indian squad for World Cup announced; Pant, Rayudu out

15 April 2019

Pant, who made a late claim for his inclusion in the squad, missed out after Dinesh Karthik was chosen as the backup keeper while Ambati Rayudu, who was a regular in the ODI squad until a year ago also did not make it to the squad.

Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif also took to Twitter and shared his thoughts on the ICC World Cup team India.

Here India's World Cup squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit Sharma (vc), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Vijay Shankar, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni (wk), Dinesh Karthik (wk), Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal.

Ambati Rayudu, K L Rahul and all-rounder Vijay Shankar's name are in the contention for the No.4 slot.

The selectors have also opted to go with all-rounders Vijay Shankar and Hardik Pandya alongside Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami in a pace-heavy bowling attack. That's the reason we went with Dinesh Karthik. They are now set to face-off with Pakistan in a one-off T20I on 5 May followed immediately by five ODIs - an exercise that is sure to further sharpen both sides before the World Cup. Having tried Shankar at the top, they have backed him in the squad.

'To begin with, he will only be a reserve opener, but if the team management needs, he can bat in the middle order too'.

While Kohli said India are looking to fill just one more spot, the selectors would know that they have more than one spot to fill and various combinations to look at.

Rishabh Pant, who has been India's regular wicketkeeper in Tests in the absence of Wriddhiman Saha, is another absentee and chairman of selectors MSK Prasad explained that Karthik was chosen due to his superior wicketkeeping skills. We all were in unison that either pant or DK will come in only when Mahi [Mahendra Singh Dhoni] is injured. In an important game, wicket-keeping is also important. But the selectors went for the experience ahead of the exuberance of youth. "Pant is full of talent".
