Democrats step up pressure for President Trump’s tax returns

Neal's office did not immediately respond to CNN's request for comment on Sanders' Sunday statements.

Ms Sanders however defended Mr Trump Sunday, telling ABC news: "The president is wishing no ill will and certainly not violence towards anyone".

Neal said that the Committee is "considering legislative proposals and conducting oversight related to our Federal tax laws, including, but not limited to, the extent to which the IRS audits and enforces the Federal tax laws against a President".

But according to a report published by The Washington Post on Thursday, the plan to send detained immigrants who are in the country illegally to so-called sanctuary cities was seen by some White House officials as a way "to retaliate against President Trump's political adversaries".

Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott said President Donald Trump may not really believe in his own "sanctuary city" proposal, and is perhaps just floating the idea to "make everybody insane".

Frustrated by rising numbers of undocumented immigrants arriving at the southern border and a failure to get Congress to fully fund a U.S. -Mexico border wall, Trump has sought to taunt Democrats by dangling the possibility of an influx of illegal immigrants into their communities. This was couched heavily in denials that Trump had done anything illegal, no doubt because Sanders herself suspects that Trump's blanket denial such a conversation happened is a likely non-starter, but she hedged on both.

"I don't understand why the president's attracted to it at all", Stephanopoulos said. Our immigrant neighbors make up more than 18 percent of our population, and 21 percent of our population speaks a language other than English at home. "They do these watered down push backs that frankly they feel like give them enough cover, but aren't really getting the job done".

"Whether or not it moves forward, that's yet to be determined", she told Fox News Sunday.

Pelosi's demand came after Trump tweeted a video of Omar's exact words describing the 9/11 terrorist attacks as "some people did something" while also showing tragic images from that day. And Democrats have stated time and time again they support open borders, they support sanctuary cities.

Ilhan Omar, a Democratic lawmaker from Minnesota, has been at the center of an escalating row following a speech she made about Islamophobia in which she was accused by conservatives of downplaying the deadliest attacks on USA soil by characterizing the event as "some people did something".

He said the president had no right to use funds appropriated by Congress for other purposes "to ship immigrants all over the country".

Sanders said it was one of many options on the table, though she hoped the solution would be for Congress to work with the president on comprehensive immigration reform.

Trump tweeted, "So interesting to see the Mayor of Oakland and other Sanctuary Cities NOT WANT our now "detained immigrants" after release due to the ridiculous court ordered 20 day rule".
