Victims killed, injured during school shooting in Brazil

14 March 2019

The two shooters committed suicide after the rampage at the school in Suzo, a community near Sao Paulo, the police said. Five children are reportedly among the dead, as well as a school employee and a passerby.

Aged between 20 and 25 years old, the alleged attackers are not believed by police to be former students of the school that has some 1,000 primary and secondary students.

Horacio Pereira Nunes, a retiree whose house is next to the school, said he began hearing shots around 10 a.m.

Before entering the Raul Brasil school in Suzano, a city on the eastern outskirts of metropolitan Sao Paulo, the assailants, former pupils aged 17 and 25, shot and killed the owner of a auto rental agency from which they had stolen a vehicle.

In the 1999 attack on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two students killed 13 people. Globo reported that a witness said he saw one of the attackers with a gun and the other with a knife.

Kelly Milene Guerra Cardoso, 16, said she and other students took refuge in the school's cafeteria, locked the door and lay on the floor.

"I escaped with one friend and went home and then came back to look for another friend".

"Then a lot of kids started running out, all screaming", he said. "I thought [the sound] was from bombs", said teacher Sandra Perez.

Two young men, wearing hoods and carrying several weapons, opened fire at a school in southern Brazil on Wednesday, killing eight people before taking their own lives, the governor of Sao Paulo said.

The last one occurred in 2011, when the former student of a school returned and shot 12 children fatally, Fox News reports.

The attack comes after Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced that the country's gun ownership controls would be eased. Soon after his January 1 inauguration, Bolsonaro issued a decree making it easier to buy a gun. "Maybe that's what happened". "We heard many students jumped the wall", Cabral said hopefully.
