Eagles Will Likely Trade or Release DE Michael Bennett

09 March 2019

The three-time Pro Bowler captured Super Bowl XLVIII with the Seattle Seahawks at the end of the 2013 season. His latest effort - which earned an overall grade 75.9 - saw him rack up 78 total quarterback pressures, which tied with none other than Trey Flowers and J.J. Bennett has heard the reports that the Philadelphia Eagles are shopping him in potential trades, and told the panel that he understands the National Football League is a business. Although he is coming off of a down season statistically, where he finished just 4.0 sacks, Graham finished with 9.5 sacks in 2017 and was one of the best defensive ends in all of football.

The Eagles prioritize defensive line depth over nearly everything else in football, but they've also got a lot of it already and could decide they'd rather go with multiple cheaper options instead of giving Bennett even more money. "I actually want a pay raise at this point", Bennett said. He is an incredibly versatile player who can play in any spot along the defensive line, and is equally adept at defending both the run and the pass. It still seems like a smart addition for New England, which has an uncanny sense of when they can get another valuable year or two out of a veteran who is nearing the end.

Bennett, 33, told Anderson that Patriots coach Bill Belichick has been fond of his game. Flowers led the Patriots with 45 pressures. In fairness, he probably does deserve a raise, but the Eagles aren't going to give him one, especially after re-signing Brandon Graham to a three-year, $40 million deal. Now, the Eagles will free up around seven million. He is projected to start opposite Derek Barnett, who was placed on injured reserve in October following shoulder surgery.

He got his wish down the stretch last season and made the most of it, posting 5.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss over the second half of the season. Chris Long's situation is unclear. He called his new role "a test of character" in early October, and while making sure he put team first in his comments, was not shy about wanting to play more.

Could there be another set of brothers on the Patriots?
