Ocasio-Cortez's Green New Deal: What's in it

07 February 2019

Ouch. Ocasio-Cortez can argue today that Pelosi's wrong about not knowing what it is, at least. The Democrats' plan envisions shifting away from fossil fuels and other sources of emissions that cause global warming within 10 years.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez explained Thursday why she had not been named on the House's new select committee on climate change by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, stressing it was not a "snub", but rather that she turned down an offer for a position. "It will make clear who is just using it as a buzzword and who is taking it seriously".

A news conference at the Capitol is set for Thursday, the day they introduce the resolution. "This is going enter the 2020 election cycle as one of the top two or three issues for every candidate on both sides". The last thing Pelosi needs is to have Ocasio-Cortez hijack it for her own purposes, or to issue bills that would only produce gales of laughter.

The document, unveiled by rising political star Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey, marks the first formal attempt by lawmakers to define potential legislation to create big government-led investments in clean energy and infrastructure to transition the US economy away from fossil fuels.

The New York freshman lawmaker was one of the sponsors at Thursday's unveiling of a Green New Deal resolution on controlling climate change. But on the other, it could put candidates in a hard position when pressed on the costs and impact on certain jobs and industries.

But Ocasio-Cortez didn't seem to mind Pelosi's remarks on her flagship climate change proposal, much less calling it by the wrong name.

Ocasio-Cortez's ideas have also received plaudits from Justice Democrats, a progressive political action committee that has been instrumental in trying to push the Democratic Party to the left.

Ocasio-Cortez said she was not offended that Pelosi called the resolution "the green dream".

Advocacy of stronger environmental laws has been an important part of the agenda of Ocasio-Cortez, a New York Democrat, and other progressives in the new Congress. Hundreds of young activists stormed Pelosi's office after Democrats won the House in November and were briefly joined by Ocasio-Cortez in a live-streamed protest to demand passage of a radical plan to fight climate change.

The California Democrat told reporters she hadn't seen the proposal.

"The Green New Deal fully tackles the existential threat posed by climate change by presenting a comprehensive, 10-year plan that is as big as the problem it hopes to solve while creating a new era of shared prosperity", according to a summary of the resolution released by the politicians on Thursday.

Even so, their Green New Deal goes far beyond the Clean Power Plan proposed by President Barack Obama. "Its aspirational goals will help our country combat climate change through clean and renewable energy, create millions of new jobs in the process, and safeguard our environment for generations to come".
