More than 6 million people have been sick with influenza this season, according to data released Friday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, but IL numbers show this season, so far, hasn't been as severe as last year's.
Last month, a 3-year-old Aurora girl died from flu-related complications, according to Kane County officials.
As the virus spreads across the state and the country, experts like Dr. Spencer Durham, assistant clinical professor and infectious disease specialist in the Auburn's Harrison School of Pharmacy, say there is still plenty of time to get protected with a flu shot. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout flu season, even into January or later.
A total of 17,743 laboratory-confirmed flu cases have been reported, the Public Health Agency of Canada said in its weekly FluWatch report. Flu is widespread in 30 states, according to the latest data, and the season is expected to last for several more weeks.
Northern Manitoba has been hit hard in the 2018-19 flu season, with 130 influenza cases from September 1 to December 29, second only to Winnipeg which had 210.
Between 6.2 million and 7.3 million people in the United States have developed the flu this season, according to data released Friday by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"The findings support the importance of pregnant women receiving the influenza vaccine, and of prompt treatment with antiviral medications for pregnant women suspected of having influenza", said lead researcher Kim Newsome. Between 69,300 and 83,500 people have been hospitalized because of the virus. The first model, ARGO (AutoRegression with General Online information), leverages information from electronic health records, flu-related Google searches and historical flu activity in a given location.
Flu vaccines are available at the Auburn University Medical Clinic, as well as at many area drugstores and clinics. Those numbers are based on data from about 8.5 percent of the US population, or about 27 million people.
Especially in homes with young children, Murti recommends the flu vaccine for everyone in the household, including siblings, parents and grandparents.
The Ministry of Health said that people who want the flu vaccine can get in touch with their public health offices.
Still, the flu can be deadly and should be taken seriously. This year, the season is unwrapping slower than those last year.
