Person driving blindfolded crashes while playing the 'Bird Box Challenge'

There were no injuries reported in connection with the crash.

The 17-year-old driver, her 16-year-old passenger and the occupants of the other vehicle all escaped serious injury.

The latest viral challenge is responsible for a crash on a street in Layton, Utah, police said this week.

Based on the hit Netflix horror starring Sandra Bullock, the social media challenge involves participants taking part in tasks while wearing a blindfold, emulating characters in the film who must evade sight-targeting monsters.

Netflix tweeted a warning on 2 January, saying: "Can't believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE".

The driver veered into oncoming traffic and struck a passenger vehicle.

Authorities say no one was injured during the crash.

"Honestly I'm nearly embarrassed to have to say "Don't drive with your eyes covered" but you know apparently we do have to say that", Lyman said.

When the movie first came out, Netflix gave a clear warning to viewers to not try the unsafe challenge.

"Bird Box" is a recently released Netflix drama featuring Sandra Bullock where a woman and her children live in an apocalyptic world that requires them to cover their eyes to avoid evil in order to escape. One YouTube star also filmed himself driving while blindfolded. But she may face reckless driving charges after she and a 16 year-old passenger allegedly pulled their beanies over their eyes and attempted to drive down a local highway.
