Ex-United boss Mourinho lands new job in Qatar for Asian Cup

The likes of Paul Pogba and Marcus Rashford have looked like completely different players under the Norwegian interim boss, and it will be fascinating to hear what Mourinho has to say about their dramatic upturn in form.

The fee reflects the slightly-less-than two years Mourinho had remaining on his contract, an improved deal which had been agreed a year ago.

The 55-year-old had nine games in charge of Benfica in 2000 and also managed Uniao Leiria and Porto in his homeland before leaving for Chelsea in 2004.

His record speaks for itself and various new job opportunities have been mooted since he became available to take charge at a new club. "He is very relaxed about it and would be happy to wait until the end of the season if he needs to".

Real Madrid, who the Portuguese coached from 2010-2013, have been heavily linked with a move to bring Mourinho back to the Bernabeu.

But the manager was let go by the club due to their struggles in all competitions this campaign as they were sixth on the log before he was sacked.

Despite his admiration for Benfica and Portuguese football, the manager sees his return to the game at a top European club.

"There has been no contact, but they did get in touch with Jose after (Julen) Lopetegui was dismissed (in late October)", the Mail reports the source as saying.

According to the publication, Real boss Florentino Perez remains a huge fan and the Champions League holders will do all they can to land the manager.

Sunday's 2-0 defeat at home to Real Sociedad was Los Blancos' sixth of the season, which saw them fall 10 points behind league leaders Barcelona.

"There are things that have been said and I do not want to feed those rumours", he said, "but when a player or coach is asked to come back to a club it means they did something positive there".

José Mourinho has spoken publicly to rule himself out of the vacant manager's job at Benfica, but refused to make any further comment on his dismissal by Manchester United in December.
