Pelosi and Schumer's response to Trump's shutdown address

09 January 2019

Mr Trump, who has long railed against illegal immigration at the border, has recently seized on humanitarian concerns to argue there is a broader crisis that can only be solved with a wall along the US-Mexico border.

Mr Trump's remarks made Democrats' evening easier.

Our southern border is a pipeline for vast quantities of illegal drugs, including meth, heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. Every week 300 of our citizens are killed by heroine alone. The same is true of drugs generally.

"At the request of Democrats, it will be a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall".

THE FACTS: That's not true.

She said the Democrats also want a secure border, but Mr Trump's wall is not the solution, as she offered options including building infrastructure and installing new technology. Disputes over wall funding are at the heart of an ongoing partial shutdown of the USA federal government.

However, this notion that the U.S.is only crime-ridden because of undocumented immigrants is false. The President will travel to the border on Thursday to once again make his case for the wall. But that legislation didn't authorize the kind of wall Trump has always been advocating since he launched his campaign.

Trump accused Democrats of not acknowledging what he calls the "crisis" at the border and says they refuse to support funding for border security and what he calls the "common sense" wall.

THE FACTS: That's one way to look at it.

The two sides are scheduled to return to the bargaining table on Wednesday.

The dispute over wall funding - with Mr Trump demanding $5.7 billion just for this year to help build it - led to a stalemate in Congress over funding for parts of the government. The refusal of Democrats to approve the money is another.

With his use of a formal White House speech instead of his favored Twitter blasts, Trump embraced the ceremonial trappings of his office as he tries to exit a political quagmire of his own making.

"Over the years, thousands of Americans have been brutally killed by those who illegally entered our country and thousands more lives will be lost if we don't act right now", Trump said.

In fact, a study by the libertarian Cato Institute past year found that crime rates among immigrants in Texas - both legal and unauthorized - were lower than those among native-born Americans. Those numbers mean a person's odds of becoming a victim of homicide in tightly packed, diverse New York City were about the same as they were in Wyoming, Montana and South Dakota. "Division, not unity", the NY senator said.

And Ruben Rumbaut, a University of California, Irvine sociology professor, co-authored a recent study that noted crime rates fell sharply from 1990 to 2015 at a time when illegal immigration spiked.

The President also repeated an assertion that the wall will be paid for by Mexico through the new U.S. -Mexico-Canada Agreement.

Moreover, it's not in effect.

"There is a crisis that the president and his administration have created, and it's a humanitarian crisis of the people at the southern border whom are seeking asylum".

The cost of US President Donald Trump's border wall that has caused a three-week shut-down of the federal government would amount to just 0.11 per cent of its annual spending, according to reports. "Hopefully, we can rise above partisan politics in order to support national security", he said.

Trump Tuesday described Corporal Singh, 33, a national "hero", saying America's heart broke the day the young officer was "savagely murdered" in cold blood by an "illegal alien".

The ripple effects are endless: Amidst all the talk about protecting US borders, a large number of TSA agents are calling in sick due to working without pay, increasing safety risks in airports nationwide.

Watch the full statements by both Trump and the Democrats.
