09 December 2018

The new hatchback of a Golf class Scala Skoda has finally officially debuted.

The Scala is the first vehicle in the VW Group to get the latest version of the technology, which offers over-the-air updates, live traffic-based navigation and accident-activated emergency calling.

The interior of the new Skoda SCALA. "We're convinced that the Scala has the best chance of redefining the A segment for Skoda".

The Scala measures 4,362 mm long, 1,793 mm wide and 1,471 mm tall and has a 2,649 mm wheelbase.

As reported, the all-new cabin gains a segment-leading 9.2-inch information display at the top of the centre stack, and the 10.25-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument cluster is offered as an option.

As with nearly every other Skoda, practicality is high on the Scala's agenda, with the automaker keen to point out it has the longest interior in its class, and a class-leading 467 litre boot, which grows to 1410L when the rear seats are folded down.

There are three petrol engines available: a 70kW/175Nm 1.0-litre three-cylinder with a five-speed manual, a more powerful 85kW/200Nm version of that engine, and a 110kW/250Nm 1.5-litre four-cylinder.

Skoda has also laid emphasis on making the Scala one of the safest option in its segment by fitting the auto with safety tech like lane assist, side assist, autonomous emergency braking, crew protect assist, adaptive cruise control and up to nine airbags. Discounts should also lower the Scala's price even further - as an example, What Car? There are three gasoline units: an entry-level 1.0-liter TSI three-cylinder producing 95 PS (94 hp), a mid-range 1.0-liter TSI with 115 PS (113 hp) and a top-of-the-line 1.5-liter TSI four-cylinder that makes 150 PS (148 hp). A 1.0 G-Tec CNG engine rated at 89 BHP will be offered at a later date. This is electrically unlocked at the push of a button in the boot. With a pair of slim, angular LED headlights (standard, full LED is optional), wide radiator grille with vertical slats and thick chrome surrounds, as well as wheel selection from 15- to 18-inches, the Scala appears significantly more athletic than the Rapid it replaces. All will mated to 5- or 6-speed manuals, or a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. Currently, the Czech brand has taken the lead of the India operations from Volkswagen and is looking at heavy localisation of the MQB A0 platform.

The Scala also comes with many assistance systems which were previously available only for the higher-priced segments.

Available as an option, the dynamic chassis control lowers the suspension by 15mm and offers standard or sport driving modes, along with eco and individual settings.
