Three Takeaways as Trump Picks Former Fox Anchor for UN Envoy Post

08 December 2018

President Donald Trump says he'll nominate State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert (NOW'-urt) to be the next USA ambassador to the United Nations.

Maybe the new ambassador will eventually become a rock star beyond the ranks of Fox News viewers and enhance her own power, so long as she doesn't undercut the ultimate Boss.

Haley herself arrived at the United Nations with little foreign policy experience beyond promoting worldwide investments in SC.

"Haley also lacked foreign policy experience when she took the United Nations posting, but she had twice been elected governor of SC".

Ms. Nauert joined the administration in April 2017, with no foreign policy experience and she played a relatively low-key role owing to a reportedly strained relationship with former Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. If her much more recent experience at the State Department provides such rich fodder for critics, it portends a hard confirmation process ahead.

The State Department declined to comment and Nauert did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As a Fox News host, Nauert once declared that she would buy Trump's daughter Ivanka's products after the chain of luxury department stores Nordstrom announced that it was closing down the line.

President Donald Trump is expected to nominate State Department spokeswoman and former Fox TV news anchor Heather Nauert as USA ambassador to the United Nations, according to multiple reports.

According to reports, news of the potential appointment of an establishment Republican had been well received by some Democrats and Republicans, but the confirmation process is nevertheless likely to be tough.

Others, including former USA ambassador to Russia, Michael McFaul, criticized the choice.

President Trump said she had done "an incredible job". With Mike Pompeo in charge of State, Nauert has been on the road much more. I think about sleeping in. I do. However, she quickly learned key issues and how the United Nations operates. The first ambassador to the U.N.to serve in a presidential Cabinet was actually Henry Cabot Lodge Jr., under Eisenhower. "But, I think it [the USA ambassador job] is not going to be what it was under Nikki Haley, which was a serious competitor under a vacuum at the NSC [National Security Council] and at the State Department under [former Secretary of State Rex] Tillerson". The more treaties we sign, the safer we supposedly are. Further, she will confront a stream of anti-U.S. and anti-Israel rhetoric at the world body - something Haley constantly pushed back against during her tenure.

"She is obviously extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in the foreign policy of this administration and has answered questions and defended it in front of a number of different press inquiries", Schaefer said. The president both denies watching hours of Fox and other networks each day and says publicly that he "watches all the shows". It was filled temporarily at one point by Trump's current national security adviser John Bolton.
