Six dead and 50 injured in nightclub stampede

Six people, including five young teenagers, were crushed to death in the early hours of Saturday following a stampede at a packed nightclub near Ancona on Italy's Adriatic coast, officials said.

Twelve of the 35 injured were in serious condition, Capocasa said.

Around 1,000 people - many of them young - were in the Lanterna Azzurra (Blue Lantern) club for a performance by Italian rapper Sfera Ebbasta.

At least six people are dead after a stampede at a nightclub in Italy, which left dozens of others injured.

Officials said people ran for the exits after someone sprayed a noxious substance at 1am local time (12am GMT). We ran for... one of the emergency exits but it was blocked. Dozens were injured, at least 10 seriously.

However, police spokesman Cristian Carrozza later said they were still "trying to ascertain what had caused the youths to rush out", adding: "There are three exits and one of these was used".

A similar incident occurred in Piazza San Carlo in Turin in 2017, when pepper spray was sacked in a robbery attempt at a crowded screening of a soccer match, leaving 1,500 people injured and one dead as the panicked crowd struggled to escape.

Italy's head of state, President Sergio Mattarella, demanded that a "full light be shone on what happened, ascertaining any responsibility and negligence". "Therefore, safety must be assured with particular care in crowded meeting places, through rigorous controls", Mattarella said.

Pope Francis said during Saturday's Angelus prayers that he would pray for "the children and the mother who died last night.as well as for the injured".
