After leaving the Justice Department, Barr served in a variety of high-level corporate positions, including as general counsel and executive vice president of Verizon Communications.
Barr served as Mueller's boss when he was attorney general in the early 1990s and Mueller led the criminal division at the Justice Department.
"To the extent it is not pursuing these matters, the department is abdicating its responsibility", he was quoted in a November 14, 2017 article.
While everyone knows that Mr. Trump can change his mind in a heartbeat, the general feeling among those close to the matter, is that a decision on Barr could take place within a matter of days. Respected by Republicans. Respected by Democrats. Sessions's chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, is now serving as acting attorney general. The question is whether Barr would pass Trump's loyalty test - which proved to be Sessions' undoing, after the latter recused himself from overseeing the Russian Federation investigation.
Currently, Mr Barr is counsel at the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Washington DC.
The issue many Democrats and some Republicans may have with a possible Barr nomination are statements he made in the past about Hillary Clinton, James Comey and the president's authority to investigate the Uranium One deal.
According to the Washington Post, former attorney general William P. Barr is the leading candidate to head the Justice Department.
"In my view, prosecutors who make political contributions are identifying fairly strongly with a political party ..."
Barr also raised concerns about special counsel Mueller's appointment of prosecutors with a history of donating to Democratic candidates, telling The Washington Post in July 2017 that he "would have liked to see him have more balance on this group".
Barr also wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post past year defending Trump's controversial decision to fire former attorney general James Comey. "He's the kind of person who could get confirmed".
One of the people who spoke to the AP said there have been discussions among senior administration officials about Barr's willingness to do the job, and said the belief was that he was open to doing it if asked.
"I have worked with him for over 25 years and I believe it would be a great choice", Cullen told ABC News.
