Kendrick Lamar, Cardi B & Drake Lead the 2019 Grammy Nominations

07 December 2018

The album of the year race also includes Cardi B's Invasion of Privacy, Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer, Kacey Musgraves's Golden Hour, Brandi Carlile's By the Way, I Forgive You and Post Malone's Beerbongs & Bentleys. Yet, there she is, just behind Lamar and Drake's seven nominations, with six nods, including record of the year, album of the year and song of the year. For Best Rap Performance, the nominees are "Be Careful" by Cardi B, "Sicko Mode" by Travis Scott, Drake, Big Hawk & Swae Lee, "Nice For What" by Drake, "King's Dead" by Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock, Future & James Blake, and "Bubblin" by Anderson.Paak.

The rapper, 49, failed to win any of his eight Grammy nominations in 2018, but now Jay-Z and his wife Beyonce are up for three awards as The Carters.

The 2019 Grammys will be awarded at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on February 10.

But women will also lead in a variety of categories this year. She has garnered 10 awards and is the only woman to win album of the year twice. The pop singer, raised in Pickering, Ont., was named in two categories - song of the year for In My Blood and best pop vocal album.

Canadian rapper Drake meanwhile got love from the academy across the top categories for his album "Scorpion" and hit "God's Plan".

Six of the eight 2019 nominees for Best New Artist are women.

One of the nominees is Greta Van Fleet, whose debut album, "Anthem of the Peaceful Army", was released too late for Grammy consideration, though the MI band had played festivals - including Lollapalooza in Grant Park - on the back of a pair of 2017 EP's and a major-label marketing push. If a best new artist nomination can be categorized as "long overdue", Price qualifies.

The Carter's new album, Everything Is Love, will be competing for Best Urban Contemporary Album against The Kids Are Alright by Chloe x Halle, Chris Dave And The Drumhedz by Chris Dave And The Drumhedz, War & Leisure by Miguel, and Ventriloquism by Meshell Ndegeocello.

Cardi B, Gaga, H.E.R., Morris, Gambino, producer Sounwave and engineer Mike Bozzi scored five nominations each. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper also picked up four nominations for the song "Shallow" from A Star Is Born, although the film's soundtrack itself wasn't eligible, per The Hollywood Reporter. The group snagged a nod for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their song "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", which they released over the summer.

THE GREATEST SHOWMAN has been nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media and "This is Me" from the soundtrack was nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

Other famous faces outside of music to earn nominations include Tiffany Haddish and former USA president Jimmy Carter, both up for best spoken word album.

Buddy Guy was nominated for best traditional blues album for "The Blues Is Alive and Well". Her latest album was only nominated for one award, best pop vocal album.
