Family: Body found in Costa Rica belongs to Florida woman

07 December 2018

Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department (OIJ) identified the body as that of 36-year-old Carla Stefaniak, who went missing during her vacation in San Jose on the night of November 27. By Tuesday afternoon, officials said the body appeared to be Stefaniak, but as of Wednesday morning, they are still waiting for a fingerprint analysis to be completed.

Carlos Caicedo, Stefaniak's brother, said the owner of the Airbnb told him a security guard saw his sister get into a auto with her bags at 5 a.m. the morning of her flight.

She traveled to Costa Rica with her sister-in-law, April Burton, on November 22 to celebrate her birthday.

A body found partially buried in the backyard of an AirBnB in Costa Rica has been identified as missing Miami Beach woman Carla Stefaniak, that nation's authorities announced Tuesday.

Investigators found blood inside of Stefaniak's room and on the property of the AirBnB she was staying at, BBC World News reports. She had a flight the next day (11/28) at 1 pm, but she never showed up. Her body, covered in plastic bags, was discovered Monday about 300 yards from the Airbnb where she stayed.

A Facebook page that is being updated by a family friend says relatives have not identified the remains.

The body of a woman who mysteriously vanished from her holiday Airbnb after sending loved ones an alarming message is believed to have been found.

Witnesses supposedly saw Stefaniak leaving the Airbnb around 5 a.m. with her luggage and getting into an unknown vehicle, according to the Miami Herald.

Walter Espinoza, head of the country's Judicial Investigation Department, told reporters that Stefaniak was killed by a blunt force trauma to the head and that 32-year-old Bismarck Espinosa Martinez has been arrested, according to NBC.

"That's when we knew that something's not right", Burton said.

He lived in the same Airbnb where Stefaniak was staying.

Burton had previously warned that Stefaniak may have been kidnapped as an Uber driver who was scheduled to drive her to the airport said she had taken another auto there.

The body was found covered in plastic bags near an Airbnb apartment that was rented by Stefaniak, who went missing almost a week ago. She also texted that it was pouring rain and that the power was out.

"As a effect of this tracking, at midday we found the decomposing body of a person and according to preliminary investigations it's the body of a woman", stated Chief Walter Espinosa of the Costa Rican Judicial Police force. We will always be with her and we know she will always be with us.

The Miami Herald reported that Stefaniak immigrated to the United States from Venezuela in 2000 and works for a Miami insurance agency.

That same night, she was Facetiming with a friend in NY when the call dropped about 9pm.
