There's a fix for the Windows 10 file association problem coming - slowly

11 November 2018

The October 2018 update, which Microsoft has yet to re-release for all Windows 10 users will bring some improvements to the dark mode in Windows 10.

Other affected users report being told to wait a few hours for the problem to resolve itself. Users reported that their licensed installs of Window 10 Pro were telling them that they were not activated and advising them to install Windows 10 Home instead. The company issued an Emerging Issue notice, and a copy of a technical support chat states that the activation error is known to impact Windows 10 Pro users in the US, Japan, Korea, and other unnamed countries. Windows 10 user DanielRandy posted his activation issue on Microsoft's answers forum and posted a quote said to be from a Microsoft agent. Either way, it is yet another annoying issue affecting Windows 10.

Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. This means Customers will be able to use Alexa on their windows 10 devices and Cortana in Alexa.

The file associations issue is something that was reported to Microsoft back in May by Windows Insiders, and according to Forbes it's existed in various forms since 2015.

Amazon is continuing to expand its Alexa digital voice assistant beyond its Echo speakers with the launch of an app on Windows 10. Fortunately, in my case, it worked-though there's no guarantee you'll have the same luck, unfortunately.

"My Lumia 930 Windows 10 was working perfectly last night and Outlook email/calendar was fine", complained a user posting under the name Joseph Totten.

This hiccup in Windows is just the latest headache for Microsoft's desktop operating system division. You can download the Alexa app now from the Microsoft Store. Surface Pro 6, Surface Laptop 2, Surface Studio 2 and Surface Headphones: Everything Microsoft just announced CNET Plus: Windows 10 October 2018 Update is now available.
