California fires: Malibu residents ordered to evacuate

Unfortunately, Scott Derrickson, best known for directing Doctor Strange, announced on Twitter early this morning that his home has been lost in the fire.

Cal State Channel Islands has also been closed.

San Luis Obispo County residents traveling south on Friday into Ventura County and Los Angeles should use caution and be prepared for delays and detours caused by two wildfires that have closed parts of Highway 101 and prompted evacuations.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department has issued mandatory evacuation orders south of the 101 freeway to Mulholland Highway.

About 1,000 structures have been reportedly destroyed, majority in Paradise, a town of about 26,000 people that has been virtually wiped out by the exploding blaze, reports and photos show.

Her family was among at least 40,000 residents forced to evacuate in Butte County after the fire broke out early Thursday, "growing uncontrollably" at a rate of about 80 football fields per minute.

"We're talking devastated", McLean said.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweets that the fire is headed to the ocean, punctuating the message with the declaration: "Imminent threat!"

The swift-moving Camp Fire, raging about 80 miles north of Sacramento, consumed Paradise, and moved Friday morning into the eastern side of Chico, a city with a population of around 90,000.

Winds were blowing between 25-30 miles per hour and pushed the fire across the freeway onto Conejo Mountain toward the Pacific Coast Highway.

The Ventura County fire department said Friday that 75,000 homes were ordered evacuated in the two adjoining counties west of Los Angeles.

Multiple fires were reported at more than 10,000 acres with high rate of spread and mandatory evacuation orders in place as of 8 a.m. Friday, according to Cal Fire.

"While a lot of my yard and neighbors' yards burned, the firefighters saved our homes", Janic tweeted just after 2 a.m. (5 a.m. ET) Friday. The fast-moving Hill fires started near the community of Thousand Oaks, which was in the midst of grappling with the Wednesday night shooting that killed 12 at the Borderline nightclub.

Evacuation orders in the Hidden Hills area of Los Angeles County were also downgraded to voluntary.

While not as big as the Camp Fire, the Woolsey Fire, which now measures approximately 8,000 acres, is in a much more densely populated area. The highway is expected to remain closed Friday morning, Ventura County Fire Chief Mark Lorenzen said.
