Biggest concern after AG Jeff Sessions' dismissal is the Russian Federation investigation

The marches formed a day after Trump fired Sessions, who had recused himself of the investigation into possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government agents.

DONALD TRUMP JR: Could the US President's son be the biggest scalp claimed by Robert Mueller?

Whitaker, in a Justice Department statement released on Wednesday evening said, "I am committed to leading a fair department with the highest ethical standards, that upholds the rule of law, and seeks justice for all Americans".

The special counsel also wants Trump himself to answer questions on allegations that he may have criminally obstructed the probe, a request the White House has been fighting since early this year.

They insisted on anonymity to comment on conversations they were not authorized to describe.

Trump Jr. would be the closest figure to the president yet to be roped into the probe - which has already claimed four former advisers to the US President. And did his campaign have advance knowledge of illegally hacked Democratic emails? In fact, Whitaker told CNN a year ago that a future attorney general could limit Mueller by reducing the budget "so low that his investigations grinds to nearly a halt".

During a brief stint past year as a conservative legal commentator on CNN, Whitaker often appeared as a Trump defender, saying he saw no evidence the president colluded with Russians during the 2016 campaign or obstructed justice.

About six Congressional Democrats including Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Ron Wyden and Cory Booker stressed that Trump may be attempting to disrupt the Mueller investigation and called on Whitaker to recuse himself.

"I was anxious someone wouldn't stand up", Viola said. "It would create a constitutional crisis if this were a prelude to ending or greatly limiting the Mueller investigation".

A clear focus concerns Stone, a longtime political dirty trickster. Campaign efforts include ending the Iraq war and combatting gun violence by ending politicians' affiliation with the NRA, but since 2016 the organization says it has been "a pillar of the Resistance to Trump".

Whitaker has his supporters too, including a US senator from Iowa, Joni Ernst.

Trump originally said he fired Comey on the recommendation of Sessions and Rosenstein for mishandling the inquiry into Clinton's use of private email when she was secretary of state, although the president later acknowledged he acted because of Comey's pursuit of "this Russian Federation thing".

Bannon and other Stone associates have been questioned, and multiple witnesses have appeared before the grand jury.

"To those who worry about the Mueller investigation, you need not worry".

On Thursday, a federal appeals court in Washington heard a challenge to Mueller's authority brought by Stone aide Andrew Miller, who defied a grand jury subpoena last summer and was held in contempt by a judge. Whitaker has publicly outlined strategies to stifle the investigation and can not be allowed to remain in charge of it.

Trump defended the ban by saying: "This is a very sacred place". Before joining the Trump administration in 2017, he was a vocal critic of the Mueller investigation, at one point going so far as to speculate as to how a future attorney general might "grind [] [the investigation] to nearly a halt" by limiting its budget.
