Virat Kohli's absence huge psychological plus for West Indies: Sunil Gavaskar

04 November 2018

West Indies team media manager Trinidadian Naasira Mohammed refused to comment on Russell's status when asked why he was not seen in practice with the team.

Keeping in mind the World T20 in 2020, India have picked three uncapped players (Krunal, S Nadeem and Khaleel) for this and the Australia series, aside from bringing back the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar to the squad. While he was named in the T20I squad, he was left out from the ODI team with Cricket West Indies citing an injury as the reason for his exclusion. The scale of success tilts heavily in favour of Carlos Brathwaite-led side, which has won five out of its eight clashes against India. Rohit Sharma will lead the Indian side in the absence of Virat Kohli, who has been rested for the series. India take on the Windies in the first contest on Sunday and Russell was included in the squad alongwith Keiron Pollard and Darren Bravo.

Preview: The "end of Dhoni era" notion has been dismissed unequivocally but then India, for the first time, will still be without the figure with a monumental body of work when they face West Indies in the opening T20 worldwide. Andre Russell and Sunil Narine are injured at this time.

West Indies have gotten the better of India in their recent meetings.

In 2018, Dhoni, who has also captained India to 50-over World Cup glory in 2011, managed only 245 runs at 27.22 in 17 matches. The 31-year old has a world record score of 264 in ODIs here in 2014, a Test ton (177) and two IPL titles won on this ground.

Where and how to watch the live TV coverage of India vs West Indies? He would look to carry his fine form from the ODI series, in which he finished behind Kohli, with 389 runs, at a staggering average of 129.66.

On the other hand, the Indian team has been on a roll at home for quite some time and against a weakened Windies have looked invincible for most parts of the series.

As per the latest ICC rankings, India, however, are way ahead of the Windies.

Kohli's absence would mean KL Rahul will come into the picture while Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant are expected to add firepower in the middle order alongside Krunal Pandya.

The match will begin at 7 pm.
