Juventus forward Cristaino Ronaldo omitted from Portugal national team amid rape allegations

Ronaldo, who has been left out of the Portugal squad for games against Poland and Scotland, has been backed by Juventus, who posted tweets on Thursday supporting their £105m signing.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos said on Thursday Ronaldo also will not be called up for the next round of worldwide games in November.

Due to travel to Poland for Portugal's second UEFA Nations League tie on 11 October, Santos will subsequently lead his team to Glasgow for a friendly fixture against Scotland on 14 October.

Speaking at the announcement of his squad this afternoon, Santos suggested that this latest development did not necessarily signal the end of Ronaldo's involvement with global football.

Meanwhile, Portugal coach Fernando Santos has offered his support to Ronaldo in the wake of the rape allegation.

On Wednesday, Cristiano Ronaldo strongly denied claims that he raped an American woman in 2009 after allegations were revisited in an article in a German newspaper over the weekend.

"We agreed the player wouldn't be available, wouldn't be an option for selection", Santos said.

That night, the lawsuit alleges, Ronaldo asked the woman to perform a sexual act on him in a bathroom as she was changing into attire to wear in a hot tub.

Already, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has affirmed earlier this week that it had re-opened the 2009 assault probe concerning the five-time world best player.

Ronaldo was rested for the previous global fixtures against Croatia and Italy, and has not featured for his country since the last-16 World Cup defeat to Uruguay.

In a lengthy interview with DER SPIEGEL, Mayorga outlined the violence she said Ronaldo committed against her. He then pulled her into a bedroom and raped her as she screamed "no, no, no", the lawsuit said. Her attorney, Leslie Stovall, said in a news conference on Thursday that Mayorga is still in "active therapy" to deal with the emotional impact of the alleged assault.

Ronaldo missed Portugal's previous two internationals in September, with that decision being taken to allow him time to settle at his new club after making a €100 million move to Juventus from Real Madrid.
