Canelo-Golovkin trilogy? Alvarez open to another rematch

16 September 2018

Golovkin and Alvarez fought to a controversial draw last September, and Golovkin will put his WBA (Super), WBC, and IBO middleweight titles on the line Saturday in Las Vegas.

Mexico's Saul "Canelo" Alvarez ended Gennady Golovkin's unbeaten reign as unified middleweight champion here Saturday, battling to victory by majority decision in a pulsating rematch.

The Mexican was judged to have won a frenetic final round which proved decisive, Alvarez scoring a 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 majority decision. Scores were 114-114, 115-113, 115-113 for Canelo.

The two fighters switched roles from their first fight, with Triple G trying to counter Alvarez and the Mexican fighter coming forward much of the fight.

For 12 rounds, drama finally eclipsed controversy, and the two fighters exchanged blow after blow, each man desperate to win on his own terms this time.

The fight, in front of a sellout, celebrity-studded crowd that included Mike Tyson, actor Will Smith and basketballer LeBron James at T-Mobile Arena, lived up to its billing as the best two pound-for-pound fighters in the world.

"I showed my victory with facts, " Alvarez said. "It would be great to have a third fight", Golovkin told

Golovkin was angered with the decision, the Kazakh storming out of the ring and refusing to do a post-bout interview.

David Lemieux of Canada set himself up for a possible title fight by stopping Ireland's Gary O'Sullivan with a crushing left hook at 2:44 of the first round in a middleweight clash.

The two refused to make eye contact at a news conference last week, and then at Friday's weigh-in, the fighters had to be separated after Alvarez charged at Golovkin, bumping heads during what was supposed to be a routine photo op.

"Under the right conditions, yes, " Golovkin said of a rematch. "I think we controlled the fight".

"I thought we did enough to win but I can't complain because Canelo fought a great fight and that's why we have the judges", Sanchez said after the fight. Every great fighter has a great rival.
