Tropical Storm Isaac expected to regain hurricane strength

15 September 2018

Gradual weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, but Olivia is expected to remain a tropical storm as it moves over the main Hawaiian Islands.

In an update on Thursday, September 13, 2018, the Met Office said the centre of Tropical Storm Isaac passed through the northern Lesser Antilles at approximately 9:00 am Thursday and was passing over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

Forecasters say Isaac is expected to produce total rainfall accumulations of 3 to 5 inches with isolated amounts near 10 inches across the southern Leeward Islands late this week, with 1 to 2 inches anticipated across portions of the Windward Islands.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center.

"The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast in areas of onshore winds, where the surge will be accompanied by large and destructive waves".

Isaac a little weaker and continues to lose organisation as it moves westward.

A weather warning for wind has been issued ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Helene in the United Kingdom next week, with injuries and danger to life a possibility.

Hurricane Florence has weakened somewhat early Thursday as its outer bands approach the North Carolina coast, but weather officials cautioned that the storm will still bring life-threatening conditions.

Hurricane Warnings are in effect from the South Santee River in SC to Duck, North Carolina.

Some slight strengthening is possible during the next couple of days.

"Since the track is slower and the storm will reside in the area for a longer period of time rainfall amounts are expected to be extreme", Reid Hawkins, science officer for the National Weather Service office in Wilmington, said in a statement.

There is the potential for damaging winds with gusts up to 70mph possible, with sustained winds of 30 to 40mph. It should dissipate by early next week, the hurricane center said. Vertical shear is expected to increase and turn more northwesterly during the next 36 hours, and Isaac's structure could degrade further over the next day or two.

While now classified as a hurricane, Helene will be downgraded to a storm by the time it reaches the shores of Northern Ireland.
