A summer-long chase for Colombia's World Cup star Yerry Mina concluded with a £28.5 million deal with Barcelona, the defender joining former teammate Lucas Digne who moved to Everton last week.

It was also a good day for Leicester City, who, not only managed to keep hold of Harry Maguire amid reported interest from United, but also brought in the well-regarded young defender Caglar Soyuncu from Freiburg, tied Jamie Vardy down to a new deal and signed Croatia Under-21 worldwide Filip Benkovic.

Mina, who was in the sights of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, has signed a five-year deal for a fee potentially rising to €31.75milllion. However after the initial loan Southampton will have an obligation to buy the Englishman for £20 million.

Everton officials were in Barcelona on Thursday to put both players through a medical so their moves could go through ahead of the 5pm deadline for the English transfer window.

"The manager made me feel confident about playing here".

Everton will pay Barcelona £2m for the season long loan and will also pay the player's wages.

The fee for Mina, who only joined the Spanish champions in January, could rise by 1.5 million euros and Barcelona have inserted a buy-back clause in the player's contract. "He is a good guy and we want to do our best for Everton".

"I'm delighted to sign for this fantastic club - it's a good day for me", said Gomes to Everton's in-house TV channel.

The new Premier League season starts on Friday. It is the best league in the world.

He cited Marco Silva as a key reason behind leaving Catalonia for England and claimed that "everyone in Portugal" knows of the 41-year-old's "qualities" as a manager in his interview with Everton's site.
