Melania Trump's parents become U.S. citizens

10 August 2018

Melania Trump had sponsored her parents for their green cards, Mr Wildes said in describing the process by which the Knavses had become USA citizens.

Melania Trump's parents were briskly sworn in as citizens of the United States in NY on Thursday (Aug 9).

Viktor is 74, two years older than President Donald Trump.

According to experts, there are two main ways the First Lady's parents could have achieved citizenship status - either through sponsorship from their daughter or an employer.

Mrs Trump's parents, a former vehicle dealer and textile factory worker, are Slovenian immigrants who had been living in the United States as permanent residents. Both are now believed to be retired. Trump has decried "chain migration", where adult USA citizens can obtain residency for their relatives, and tweeted on November 1, 2017, "CHAIN MIGRATION must end now!"

Asked about President Trump's heavy rebuke of family-based migration, Wildes said: "I can't comment on the President's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the President's immigration policies personally".

The Times noted that the couple would have to have their green cards for five years to become eligible for citizenship.

Trump has taken a hardline on immigration policy, criticizing so-called main migration that allows naturalized United States citizens to sponsor close relatives for permanent residency. The pair, originally from Slovenia, had been living in the permanent residents prior to obtaining citizenship.

While the Knavs now live in Mar-a-Lago and Trump Tower in New York City, they didn't always live in luxury.

The Knavses' citizenship ceremony was kept hush-hush around the Jacob K Javits Federal Building.

Trump hasn't commented or tweeted about his in-laws' newfound citizenship.

Viktor Knavs was a vehicle salesman in the Slovenian town of Sevnica, while his wife Amalija worked at a textile factory.

The first lady, born Melanija, changed her name to Melania Knauss when she started modelling.

Around the same time the Knavses were completing the ceremony, he was tweeting his rage about the ongoing Russian Federation probe ("an illegally brought Rigged Witch Hunt") and his excitement about plans for a sixth branch of the military ("Space Force all the way!").
