Thomas steps out of the shadow of Spieth as PGA champion

09 August 2018

Spieth arrives at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis needing a victory to become only the sixth player to win all four modern majors - joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods.

"It's certainly close", said McIlroy, who tees it up with Tiger Woods and defending champion Justin Thomas in the first two rounds on what will be a long and soft course. I think my best chance since Valhalla was at Carnoustie, but in golf you just have to be an eternal optimist. "And he's like, 'oh I'm gonna try to get out and putt, '" she quips.

"The only thing I haven't done is win enough". I've done a lot of good things. "There will be a lot of people, I know that", Thomas said. I always like targeting this guy on major weeks because he always seems to take his game to another level when it matters most.

Woods, a four-time victor of the PGA Championship, recently finished tied for sixth at The Open Championship for his best result at a major in five years. Not only is it the 100th PGA Championship - it's also the final major golf event of the year.

'I just don't know what to say to you at this stage.

"But it's a process".

RORY MCILROY YEARNS for a breakthrough victory after a season of near misses, with the four-time major victor hopeful this week's PGA Championship can launch his "work-in-progress" game to new heights.

"I decided I would put it up in a be a nice little reminder of home", he says. "He was in bed". He understood that Spieth, who turned pro a year earlier and effectively had a two-year start on him, has more majors, has won more tournaments, reached No. 1 first and stayed there longer. He has finished in the top 10 of all three Majors this year - definitely one to watch.

Tiger Woods of the United States speaks to the media during a press conference prior to the 2018 PGA Championship at Bellerive Country Club on August 7, 2018 in St. Louis, Missouri.

"If ever there was a major championship to be able to play semi-blind, this is the course to do it on". Players typically take the final day of practice to get in nine holes, or maybe do light work on their games.

"If I don't get injured again, stay healthy and hitting it the way I'm hitting it right now, I would think I could play a few more competitively", Love added.

"I needed that day off".

"There's going to be certain days that I'm just not going to have the speed and the flexibility and the movement that I once did". Furyk will make three captain's selections following the completion of the Dell Technologies Championship at TPC Boston, Sept. 3, and a final pick after the completion of the BMW Championship, a week later.

Woods underwent spinal fusion surgery in April a year ago and admits he feels "blessed" simply to be able to compete again, but has already failed to convert several chances to claim his first victory since 2013. Look for the 17th (creek-guarded par 5) and 18th (tight landing fairway) to play a role in the late stages of the tournament.

Most significantly, Woods also led the Open at Carnoustie with eight holes to play, only to double bogey the 11th and drop another shot on the next as playing partner Francesco Molinari went on to lift the Claret Jug. "We'll see. I've gone from zero to basically 20th in seven months".

Still, it built even more hype about his chances heading into the PGA Championship - until he shot 73-73 on the weekend at Firestone, a course that he has dominated. Five and six really hurt off shots that I could control.
