Mendocino Complex: Another day of successes, setbacks

07 August 2018

More than 14,000 firefighters are battling over a dozen major blazes throughout California, state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Scott McLean said.

NORTHCOM's National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC) in Boise, Idaho, has estimated that more than 127 wildfires are burning on about 1.6 million acres in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and Alaska.

The second part of Trump's Sunday tweet - "Must also tree clear to stop fire spreading!" - seems to refer to the practice of thinning, by which land managers selectively cut down certain trees to improve the overall health of a forest. Trump contended Monday that water could be used for "fires, farming and everything else".

Fifty-three of the almost 150 specialists who were requested by US officials last week arrived at the Northern California Geographic Area Coordination Center in Redding on Monday, NIFC spokeswoman Carrie Bilbao said, while the remaining firefighters were sent to Redmond, Ore. It killed two people, including a firefighter, and destroyed more than 1,000 buildings before being fully contained on January 12.

She says crews are "hitting it hard with everything we've got" in hopes of stopping the fire at the top of a ridge and keeping it from reaching homes a couple miles away. These backfires give off large plumes of smoke, and their flames have been visible from Ukiah, but it should be remembered that they are a firefighting measure, and though they may appear threatening from the Ukiah Valley, they instead represent progress in containing the fire, and ensuring that it does not actually threaten the valley.

The Mendocino Complex fires have swelled to become larger than the deadly Carr Fire, about 160 km to the northeast, which has killed at least six people and destroyed more than 1,500 structures. Jerry Brown called for aid from the Trump administration.

The complex of fire has been less destructive to property than some of the other wildfires in the state because it is mostly raging in remote areas.

Another fire, the almost two-week-old Carr Fire, claimed another life on Saturday, a 21-year-old apprentice lineman, Jay Ayeta, officials with PG&E Corp said on Sunday. It's the largest of eight major wildfires burning out of control across California, and that have claimed the lives of 7 people. Think of California with plenty of Water - Nice! "It is being diverted into the Pacific Ocean", Trump wrote. Whatever his targets, they don't prevent "readily available water" to be utilised to fight fires.

Fire officials have said that 95 percent of all wildfires are caused by humans, from camp fires left unattended to careless smoking, to sparks from vehicles and improperly maintained power lines.

In Shasta County, the Carr fire located near Redding, California has burned entire neighborhoods and forced thousands to flee.
