Tim Allen's character on 'Last Man Standing' won't be talking about Trump

However, when the cast and producers of Last Man Standing assembled at the Television Critics Association summer press tour Thursday, they revealed that although Allen's character maintains his political beliefs, the show is not going to tackle Trump.

'I go way back with Rosie and that's not the Roseanne I know.

For his part, Allen added that he doesn't believe ABC's decision to cancel Last Man Standing in 2017 was politically motivated.

Allen said at the time that his personal politics - he attended Trump's inauguration - might have played a role, and on Thursday he said if there was a political motivation the network certainly wouldn't admit it.

"I'm a veteran comedian for 38 years and I've never seen it, like Lenny Bruce said at the Purple Onion, 'We've gone backwards.' There are things you can't say".

Abbot also teased that introducing a child who's used to a different political system will obviously cause some interesting conflicts for a man as opinionated as Mike Baxter (Tim Allen), so we've got that to look forward to! Who makes up these rules?' the Last Man Standing actor said, making reference to this year's political climate and adding that she is 'very inclusive and tolerant'. And as a stand-up comic, it's a unsafe position to be in because I like pushing buttons.

"And, I don't know what Roseanne... but, I'm telling you, that's not the woman I know".

When Fox saved Tim Allen's Last Man Standing earlier this spring, it was assumed the former ABC sitcom would fill the conservative void left by Roseanne's cancellation. "I've worked for ABC for years", he said. Allen said in a statement.

Although the series won't shy away from Baxter's conservative views, Abbott said fans should not expect the show to address whether the married father-of-three supports the president. We don't really do issues of the week.

Meanwhile, the Last Man Standing crew addressed comparisons drawn by fans and foes alike between their show and Roseanne. "We consider ourselves a family show with a traditional character at the center of it, which is only unusual in today's environment".
