West Nile Virus detected in human in Allegheny County

30 July 2018

In 2015, there were 46 cases of West Nile in Maryland.

Use a mosquito repellent (bug spray) containing DEET or Icaridin. Oil of lemon eucalyptus should not be used on children under three years of age. Ground and aerial operations are underway to subdue these mosquito populations, according to a release.

Dusk and dawn are times when mosquitoes are most active. Consider rescheduling outdoor activities that occur during evening or early morning.

Pennsylvanians are advised to clear out standing water - like catch basins, bird baths, buckets, kiddie pools and unmaintained gutters - since that is where mosquitoes like to breed.

Empty and clean birdbaths and pet's water bowls at least once or twice a week.

Wear long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and socks when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk to reduce the amount of exposed skin, as weather permits.

COVER doors and windows with screens to keep mosquitoes out of your house. "As our program is responding with increased surveillance and control efforts throughout the area, residents are strongly encouraged to take appropriate measures to protect themselves from mosquito bites", said Rebecca Brandt, Bay County Mosquito Control Manager.

Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito Bites. This makes it important for residents to evaluate yards on a weekly basis and eliminate standing water. People over 50 and those with weakened immune systems are especially vulnerable to the disease and are more likely to experience serious consequences. The health department did not disclose the man's name. Most people who are infected will have no symptoms or only mild flu-like symptoms.

The Allegheny County Health Department was scheduled to spray a pesticide on Thursday or Friday in Pittsburgh's North Side and West End neighborhoods to kill mosquitoes.
