‘Downton Abbey’ movie is officially happening with series cast to return

13 July 2018

Downton Abbey's "original principal cast" are reuniting to make a movie version of the hit period drama.

Across six seasons of its original run, Downton Abbey - set in the wealthy Crawley family's country estate as it followed their intricate lives as well as those of the servants they employed at the turn of the 20th century - garnered a steady worldwide following and sustained critical acclaim.

Created by writer-producer Julian Fellowes, the Emmy-winning costume drama ran for six seasons from 2010-15 on ITV in the United Kingdom and on PBS in the United States.

Creator Julian Fellowes has written the film's screenplay and will produce alongside Gareth Neame and Liz Trubridge. Plot details are being kept under wraps. The series finale - a Christmas special - brought the story to a seeming close on New Year's Eve 1925. Maybe something drastic has happened in the time between the show's conclusion and the film's commencement, and not everything that was left tied up in a pretty bow will be as bright and shiny when the movie begins.

When you're alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go.to your TV to rewatch "Downton Abbey". Michelle Dockery, Dame Maggie Smith, and Hugh Bonneville will star, meaning that Lady Mary Crawley, Earl Robert Crawley and Countess Violet Crawley will be on the big-screen. "Julian's script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival's hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as "Downton' comes to the big screen". With 69 nominations, it was the most nominated non-U.S. television show in the history of the Emmys.

Adds Focus Features chairman Peter Kujawski, "Since the series ended, fans of Downton have always been waiting for the Crawley family's next chapter".

The official Twitter account for the series broke the news over social media to "cordially invite" fans to see the film, which will be screened in cinemas.

The long-rumoured film adaptation is likely to be released sometime next year.
