"We're protecting Germany, France and everybody. this has been going on for decades", Trump said.

He said they were discussing military spending and trade. Also present was France's President Emmanuel Macron, who tried this year to charm Mr Trump into more harmonious transatlantic relationship, only to see the United States president withdraw from the 2015 Iranian nuclear deal and impose tariffs on European goods.

In a startling public outburst against one of Europe's main military powers, Trump told NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg that Germany was wrong to support a new $11 billion Baltic Sea pipeline to import Russian gas while being slow to meet targets for NATO spending to protect against Russia.

While on Air Force One en route to Belgium for a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, President Trump took to Twitter to attack the alliance, going so far as to suggest he expects member nations that haven't spent enough on defense to reimburse the United States.

"I think it's fair to say that here in my office the team recognized what was coming and the importance of speaking out on it from my perspective and from the district's perspective", Curtis told Fox 13. The U.S.is paying for Europe's protection, then loses billions on Trade.

At the end of the first session of a two-day summit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the aim first was to reach 2 percent, but moments later Trump tweeted that allies were undercutting the United States on trade and needed to immediately boost spending.

He said: "Why are their (sic) only 5 out of 29 countries that have met their commitment?" US Turkish relations have recently been strained because of issues ranging from Syria to Iran, but some diplomats say the two leaders - both criticised for their polarising politics - have established a bond.

Hannity pointed out that Germany is spending billions of dollars on an energy pipeline between them and Russian Federation, and that the country's former chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, is the one leading the business effort.

Later, Mr. Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel exchanged pleasantries for the cameras during a one-on-one meeting. "On top of this the European Union has a Trade Surplus of $151 Million with the U.S., with big Trade Barriers on USA goods. NO!"

European Union figures show Russian Federation may be responsible for between 50 percent and 75 percent of Germany's gas imports, but gas makes up less than 20 percent of Germany's power production mix.

Trump told reporters during brief remarks at the end of the meeting that the two had a "very, very good relationship" and congratulated Merkel on her "tremendous success".

Trump will meet the Russian leader in Helsinki on 16 July for their first summit amid an ongoing investigation in the United States into possible Trump campaign collusion with Russia. "Will they reimburse the US?"

Trump has long complained that European NATO members do not pay enough for their own defence, singling out Germany for particular criticism.
