Arizona woman 92 kills son after refusing to go to nursing home

04 July 2018

Police arrested Blessing and charged her with murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and kidnapping.

- In a freakish turn of events, Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say a 92-year-old mother took her 72-year-old son's life after she believed he ruined hers.

A 92-year-old woman in the U.S. has shot and killed her son, allegedly because he wanted to put her into a care home.

She explained she felt her life was effectively being ended by her son and his girlfriend's decision to place her in a home. She also pointed the guns at her son's girlfriend, but the girlfriend was able to knock the guns away from her, the sheriff's office said. The two struggled over the gun after it was dislodged from Blessing before she grabbed the second weapon and aimed it at the girlfriend. She then confronted her son in the master bedroom of the home they shared, along with the son's girlfriend, in Fountain Hills, Ariz. When deputies arrived, Blessing was sitting in her recliner. She was taken into custody without incident, the sheriff's office said.

"From our understanding, she had thought about it for a few days because there was a dispute regarding her son wanting to put her in assisted living home", Maricopa County Sgt. Bryant Vanegas said.

The son's name was not immediately released. Her son was wounded and died at the scene, according to police.

She stashed two guns in her pockets for the fateful confrontation.

During the ensuing argument, she pulled out one revolver, purchased in the 1970s, and fired at her son.

"It is always concerning when domestic issues escalate to violence or tragic outcomes", stated Sheriff Paul Penzone.

It's unclear if she has a lawyer for her case yet. She later told them she deserved to be "put to sleep" for her actions.

She is scheduled to appear in court again on July 10 at the Regional Court Center Downtown in Phoenix.

Blessing remains in jail, held on a $500,000 cash bond.
