Mrs Trump sparked a firestorm of criticism over the $39 Zara khaki jacket with its daubed slogan which she wore to meet children who had been separated from their parents at a shelter in McAllen, Tx., Thursday.
Designer Hervé Pierre, who sometimes acts as Melania Trump's stylist, had never seen the controversial jacket - which is from the fast-fashion clothing line Zara's 2016 collection - before the first lady wore it this week, according to an interview with Women's Wear Daily.
"Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!" the president tweeted.
On Wednesday, when signing the executive order to reverse the policy on separating children from parents, Donald Trump cited his daughter and his wife as influencing his decision. "Do U?" on the back as she returns to Washington from a visit to the U.S. -Mexico border area in Texas at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, US. "Her goals are to thank law enforcement and social services providers for their hard work, lend support and hear more on how the administration can build upon the already existing efforts to reunite children with their families", a spokesperson for the first lady said in a statement. The First Lady's spokeswoman also said there was "no hidden message" in the jacket. "It was her small act of rebellion against her husband, his alleged cheating, his policies, and his other most embarrassing actions".
This comes on the heels of her jacket controversy, which originally was said to be "just a jacket" with no hidden message before President Trump doubled down, tweeting it was in reference to her disdain for "Fake News". "But when you are putting together a trip like this, they have to know that anything they do and say and wear is going to send a message".
During her visit, Melania asked what could be done to help facilitate the quick reunification of the migrant families.
"I thought at first it might have been fake and no way could this have been real", said Claire Thomas, New York Law School professor who has defended undocumented children in United States immigration courts.
While lawmakers were aghast that the US President virtually short-circuited any potential immigration bill, Trump has virtually begun a election campaign for both the 2018 mid-term election and the 2020 Presidential election, with frequent forays to the conservative heartland for campaign style "Make America Great Again" rallies where he is greeted by adoring crowds unquestioningly lapping up every word he says. Trump took it off before she stepped off the plane in Texas.
This isn't the first time Trump has caused waves with her choice of outfit. "She does care about the kids and was trying to do something positive to help make change and feels terrible that she is being misunderstood".
