Trump continues to mislead over border crisis, says facilities are 'the nicest'

I don't believe she really meant to say she doesn't care. However, media ground rules stipulated that these interactions not be photographed or recorded.Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesPHOTO-OPFollowing her visit to Upbring, Trump posed with U.S. Border Patrol agents.MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty Images.and McAllen police officers.MANDEL NGAN/AFP/Getty ImagesUNFORTUNATE WARDROBE CHOICEBoarding her Texas-bound flight earlier in the day, Trump was photographed wearing a Zara jacket emblazoned with the words "I really don't care".

Melania Trump went to Texas to show she cared about migrant children.

Then she wore it *again* when she deplaned back at Andrews Air Force Base after the trip - and after the wave of initial outrage.

"It's a jacket. There was no hidden message", said spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham.

Offering his own interpretation, Trump on Twitter said the message on the jacket "refers to the Fake News Media".

"SOMEONE in that operation should have seen th [e] jacket and though 'Hmmm, maybe this is't the best idea, '" CNN's Chris Cillizza tweeted.

While the jacket is now unavailable, the military-style coat, which was sold at Zara two years ago, originally retailed for $39.

On Thursday, the Pentagon said it had been asked to find space on military bases to house up to 20,000 unaccompanied children, according to the Washington Post, a strategy the Obama administration used for about 7,000 migrant children during the Central American migrant crisis in 2014.

Mrs Trump's first stop was the Upbring New Hope Children's Centre, a department of health and human services-overseen facility.

"I'm here to learn about your facility, in which I know you house children on a long-term basis, and also like to ask you how I can help these children to reunite with their families as quickly as possible", she said. But here's the thing: The first lady has had some experience with the attention paid when she boards planes.

In McAllen, Texas, for example, federal prosecutors unexpectedly declined to charge 17 parent immigrants on Thursday, with one saying "there was no prosecution sought" due to Trump's executive order aimed at keeping families together. - Trump was heading to Texas to visit shelters for migrant children separated from their parenets.

The first lady was also told the children are "usually distraught" when they arrive, but "when they see the environment they start relaxing". And not just any first lady. But, she said, "we are waiting our turn, and hoping".

Maybe Melania was practicing her new mantra, Be Best.

But Republicans - who control both chambers of Congress - have failed to unify around a measure that would end the controversial family separations while addressing key priorities supported by Trump, such as limits to legal immigration and funding for his proposed wall on the US-Mexico border.

Both House bills, backed by Trump but opposed by Democrats and immigration advocacy groups, would fund the wall Trump has proposed along the US border with Mexico and reduce legal migration, in part by denying visas for some relatives of USA residents and citizens living overseas. I don't buy that she's that callous.
