The card at The Star, headquarters of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys, features a battle of unbeaten fighters, hometown hero Spence, the International Boxing Federation champion at 23-0 with 20 knockouts, and Carlos Ocampo, 22-0 with 13 knockouts.
I've said that since I was 15-0. "I've been dealing with pressure since I've been fighting and this is just another fight for me", Spence said. I don't think there's any extra pressure fighting in my hometown. "It's just added motivation".
The co-featured, non-title fight will match Los Angeles' Danny Roman (24-2-1, 9 KOs), the WBA super bantamweight champion, against Mexico's Moises Flores (25-0, 17 KOs, 2 NC), who couldn't make weight Friday.
"I've been sending messages [to the top welterweights]". I'm going to prove we're a boxing city in Dallas and that Texas is a boxing state period. "To go to another country and fight a champion in his hometown, and to win the belt, I think I deserve to defend my belt in front of my fans".
"I was a little surprised [he didn't make weight] because it's a world championship fight and you expect him to be professional. I know there's big fights in the future, so I can't let someone like Carlos Ocampo detour my route of becoming a unified champion and, soon, to become undisputed welterweight champion of world, so I have to get past him to reach those goals and those dreams". Either way, I'm coming to break him down and get the victory. I'm always pressured to look good and perform all day.
"It's supposed to be tough with the crowd against me and I know I'm the underdog, but my mind is only on the fight", Ocampo said. He's my mandatory, so I would rather get it out of the way now, rather than have it as a bump in the road later on when I'm trying to get bigger and better fights. "I mean, I can get feisty or talk trash when somebody is disrespecting but all around, I'm just not that type of guy".
What message do you want to send to the other top welterweights Keith Thurman, Shawn Porter, Danny Garcia and Terrence Crawford? "I'm going to bring pressure for every moment of the fight and we'll see if he holds up. I know that if I put in the work, everything will come together in the ring". I'm a special fighter. "Mexican fighters are known to be tough, they're known to be durable and they're known to come to fight".
Ocampo, fighting outside of Mexico for the first time, said he feels no pressure.
"I've checked out Fortuna's fights and he's a scrapper".
The talk following Terence Crawford's dissection of Jeff Horn shifted to a potential showdown between Crawford and IBF titleholder Errol Spence Jr.
"I'm getting used to the outside the ring stuff, too".
Both fighters in the opening bout, a 10-rounder at junior welterweight, made weight.
"Right now when we are in the gym when we're talking about fights, we're talking about Carlos Ocampo".
