USA, Canada and Mexico to host 2026 FIFA World Cup

14 June 2018

The World Cup is coming to North America.

Kansas City's central location, stadium capacity and soccer culture make it a likely host. On June 2, 2010, the MLS' Montreal Impact played a friendly against Serie A powerhouse A.C. Milan in a match that saw natural grass installed just for the one-off event.

If the united North American bid is successful, it would be the first time Canada will partake in hosting the men's World Cup tournament. So the rationality of this decision has to be acknowledged, the congress of national FAs who now vote in the new system chose the bid assessed as far superior in the technical inspections. "The merits of the bid, we feel we have a compelling proposal".

"It was actually emotional because as somebody who grew up watching and playing soccer, I know it's a huge to get an event like the World Cup and I know the effect that it's going to have".

Despite reports that big footballing nations like France and Italy would cast their votes for Morocco, the North American bid won in blowout fashion on Wednesday, receiving 134 votes to Morocco's 65. Federation Internationale de Football Association promises to publish each voter's selection. Expect it to add a World Cup semifinal to its resume.

According to U.S. Soccer, Canada and Mexico are each slated to host 10 matches, while the United States will host 60.

Meanwhile, the USA hosted the World Cup previously in 1994 while Mexico hosted it in 1970 and 1986.

"We can focus on the game". Several foreign national teams also arranged games in the United States - including Spain against El Salvador in Washington, Japan against Costa Rica in Tampa, Ghana against South Korea in Miami and Portugal against Ireland in East Rutherford, N.J. - on their way to the final tournament in Brazil.

Earlier in the year, there were fears that opposition to US President Donald Trump could endanger the US-led bid for the 2026 World Cup, but those fears were allayed at the 68th Fifa Congress in Moscow, Russia on Wednesday.

At the moment, between the three nations, there are 23 candidate host cities that will be whittled down to 16.

Field dimensions smaller than FIFA's standard for World Cup matches, Catlett said, were the chief obstacles.

When Canada finally gets to that day eight years from now, we'll all be able to point to this year, 2018, as the one that changed everything for Canadian soccer.

Fifa's president, Gianni Infantino, looked opportunistically quick to immediately put himself forward for re-election next year, and he was followed by U.S. president Donald Trump with a self-congratulatory tweet.
