The current understanding between Kim and Trump may not be a complete American giveaway either, as some critics are asserting.
President Donald Trump on Wednesday morning declared an end to the North Korean nuclear threat. Trump's announcement appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed.

A North Korea expert with inside knowledge of the Trump administration agreed Tuesday that Trump had taken us back from the brink of war.
"Each of those three countries has also acknowledged that it's important that the sanctions regime that is in place today remain in place until such time as that denuclearization is, in fact, complete", Pompeo told reporters Thursday in Beijing following talks with Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the United States would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea. He says Trump and Kim Jong Un had a "blunt conversation" about changes needed for North Korea to rejoin the world community.
"He's a tough guy", the president said during a Fox News interview that aired Wednesday. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"
Trump's claim that North Korea no longer poses a nuclear threat is questionable considering Pyongyang's significant weapons arsenal. North Korea will of course be demanding that the sanctions be lifted.
There has been harsh criticism from analysts across the region and across the world of the declaration, which, while wide ranging, is entirely devoid of concrete commitments, timelines or even details about North Korean denuclearization.
On his plane, Trump talked with South Korean President Moon Jae-in at around 8-twenty to share the results of the Joint Statement with North Korea.
During his post-summit press conference, Trump admitted that he may be wrong about Kim's willingness to denuclearize.
"We will be stopping the war games which will save us a tremendous amount of money, unless and until we see the future negotiation is not going along like it should".
Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the US invasion of Iraq.
South Korea's Blue House offered cautious assent to Trump's controversial statement Wednesday that the USA would halt "war games" on the Korean Peninsula, saying the suspension of joint military drills may be necessary to assist in denuclearization talks, according to Yonhap news agency.
Trump also is wrong in saying "nothing happened" in return.
Blanket media coverage on Monday included Kim's surprise tour of the iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel and its surrounding gardens, and the first hours of the meeting with Trump in the resort island of Sentosa.
