Kyle Walker ready to sacrifice right-back role

Gareth Southgate confirmed Rashford, 20, "picked up a slight knock" during England's final training session before the squad flew out to Russian Federation on Tuesday.

Southgate led England to the top of their World Cup qualifying group unbeaten and Allardyce gave his successor his full support. Ultimately, we know we'll be judged on results but we have to focus on the processes.

Rashford also assured fans the problem was nothing serious, tweeting on Wednesday evening: "Thanks for the messages I've been getting".

Manager Southgate was given a lot of food for thought in England's final warm-up match against Costa Rica last week, as Rashford shone above everyone else to inspire a 2-0 win at Elland Road in Leeds.

England manager Gareth Southgate has confirmed that Manchester United and Three Lions forward Marcus Rashford has sustained an injury that will potentially see him miss his country's World Cup opener on Monday.

Walker had hoped to prove himself as the world's best right-back in Russian Federation, but added that he is happy to help England in any way he can.

"I'm a defender first and foremost, and if I'm playing right centre-half I am even more of a defender than the wing-backs".

"I have to move on from it".

Dier said: 'It is just a superstition more than anything now.

"Is centre-back my preferred position?"

"I've bounced back now - and while I will be extremely jealous I will be watching Gareth and the lads and hope they do extremely well", he said.

"I would be surprised if the majority of players did not say the World Cup is the biggest sporting event in the world".

Southgate added: "I think there was a shift in November when we brought in some of the younger players". "I captained my Sunday League team the Spurs youth team and occasionally wore the armband as vice-captain for Spurs", he said. If that means the gaffer thinks to help the team out I should play there I am all for it.

Welcome to the World Cup.
