In doing so he may set the U.S. up to lose its status as the world's dominant power. "We paid for a big majority of them".

North Korea is also angered by the presence of USA troops in other parts of Asia, most notably in Japan. "There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea", the president wrote on Twitter shortly after arriving back in Washington.

Meeting with staged ceremony on a Singapore island, Mr Trump and Mr Kim signed a joint statement on Tuesday agreeing to work toward a denuclearised Korean Peninsula, although the timeline and tactics were left unclear.

But there has been scepticism from both Democrats and Republicans about the lack of detail and surprise announcement about an end to joint drills with South Korea. Fears of conflict were particularly acute after Trump called Kim "Rocket Man" and Kim pledged to "tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire".

"Our unprecedented meeting - the first between an American President and a leader of North Korea - proves that real change is possible!"

At the start of his meeting with Kim, which began with a hand-shake, Trump said: "Working together we will get it taken care of...

China is set to overtake the USA as the world's dominant power within the coming decades.

China's rise has been a long time coming.

Before leaving himself, Mr Trump tossed out pronouncements on U.S. alliances, human rights and the nature of the accord that he and Mr Kim had signed.

When relations between the US and the DPRK thawed slightly between 1990 and 2005, a repatriation agreement allowed 229 sets of remains to come home to American families.

"We fully understand the peace talks were about denuclearization - we wanted this to be part of that as well", he said.

Even as they offered measured praise for Mr Trump's diplomatic efforts, congressional Republicans have emphasised the hard road that remains and pressed for more details of what exactly the President agreed to with Kim.
