Kim Jong Un Takes Selfie During Night Out in Singapore

Following the initial greeting, President Trump and Chairman Kim will participate in a one-on-one meeting, with translators only, an expanded bilateral meeting, and a working lunch.

The story was reported the front page of the ruling party's newspaper and was the only item on Monday's first news broadcast on Korean Central Television, which for many in the North is the only channel available.

The summit - the first ever between a sitting American president and North Korea's leader - was to kick off at 9 a.m., the White House said.

Pompeo met Kim in May ahead of Tuesday's meeting.

Asked by a reporter how he felt about the summit, Mr Trump said: "Very good".

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the USA and his safe return", the KCNA said.

Trump has said he hopes to make a legacy-defining deal for the North to give up its nuclear weapons, though he has recently sought to minimize expectations, saying more than one meeting may be necessary.

The White House later said discussions with North Korea had moved "more quickly than expected" and Trump would leave Singapore on Tuesday night, after the summit. On the day before the meeting, weeks of preparation appeared to pick up in pace, with US and North Korean officials meeting throughout Monday at a Singapore hotel.

The president planned to stop in Guam and Hawaii on his way back to Washington.

Trump and Kim touched down on a sweltering early summer day in Singapore, the city-state founded in the early 19th Century as a British colony because of its position at the intersection of sea lanes between Europe and Asia.

"It's unknown territory in the truest sense but I really feel confident", Trump said.

Before flying to Singapore, Mr. Trump was in Canada for the G-7 summit with leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the U.K. All seven leaders had worked out a joint statement stressing the importance of a rules-based worldwide trading system.

That's in part because of South Korea's diplomatic outreach to the North, which was highlighted by two summits this spring between the rivals' leaders. Or, it could amount to little more than a much-photographed handshake.

Kim is due to meet Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong later on Sunday, Singapore's ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement.

He may be staying at the St. Regis Hotel, where China's President Xi Jinping once stayed.

The last-minute change of schedule came as both sides finalized preparations for the meeting.

Trump's early exit will be his second from a summit in just a few days.

The Trump administration is pushing for Pyongyang to dismantle its nuclear weapons program, an action South Korea has said Kim is willing to take.

Pompeo said these guarantees would be "different and unique" from what the United States has been willing to provide before. Kim has sought to overhaul his image this year in a bid to ease global sanctions imposed after he tested nuclear bombs and long-range ballistic missiles.

The United States is prepared to provide North Korea "unique" security guarantees if it undertakes "complete verifiable and irreversible" denuclearisation, Secretary of State Michael Pompeo said on Monday.
